Yuki Kihara, The Arrival of Salome, lenticular prints, 2017
At the Art Gallery in Napier, really amazing exhibition about Samoan diaspora, culture and colonisation.
Prints were great because they had varying depths and perspectives, which I found really interesting. Also their simplicity was beautiful and added to the impact of the message (which was very powerful anyways)
—> media choices (also had vids of performance works), use of Victorian style costume to add meaning/impact
China’s Van Goghs, 2016, directed by Yu Haibo and Kiki Tianqi Yu
Starring Zhao Xiaoyong, painter of Van Gogh reproductions for 20 years
—> why we feel the need to create, why do I pursue art? Art and creation has value
Interesting forms —> tree roots and flowers, algae and chemicals on geothermal pools and vents, weird spiderweb
I found it very strange to see 800 year old carvings directly below the most exclusive and expensive houses in taupo
— contradicting yet coexisting, it’s confusing really, but reminded me of the upcoming sound piece; natural and man-made brought together
Māori carvings on the cliffs of Lake Taupo, incredibly imposing up close — detailed and secret, very beautiful
—> symbolism of the imagery is very powerful, think of all the gods and stories contained in this rock
Textile work at the Auckland Art Gallery
—> combination of textiles and found objects, plus how they’re displayed interests me — mass grouping creates contrast and harmony that i like, each object tells a story
Structures outside the Obliteration Room at the Auckland Art Gallery really interested me, something to think about for next term maybe —> venturing into more sculptural, textile, costume, installation hopefully
John Pule at the Auckland Art Gallery, huge panelled work using traditional Pacific Islander imagery, tells the story of the modern world over 5 parts and combines bombs and planes with mythology, gods and creation-myth style narrative
—> thinking about using scrolls/stretches of paper next term (Nancy spero) — combines contemporary & traditional narratives — folk art-esque — scale? — drawing style is loose and relaxed
